Responding to Clarice Jensen's composition, I developed an architectural score to mirror its three part structure. It is an attempt at treating architecture like a dynamic element that can be altered, repeated and elongated at will, as if it were a more mutable substance. At the same time I wanted the space to feel ancient and immutable to create a tension with this possibility.
In Part I, the ebb and flow of the looping drones are echoed in a sequence of horizontally repeated endless galleries, coming into view and quickly retreating into darkness. In Part II, as the drones subside we move into one of the galleries towards an unknown void. As the composition builds, the world around the user slowly pitches upward inducing a feeling of ascension (and freefall in VR). In Part III the gallery recedes and we push forward over an infinite expanse as a monumental slit-scan skylight form unfolds around us. As the composition nears the end, so does the slit-scan space gradually compress the field of view until we return to the void.
The piece was originally created for live video projection and was toured extensively with Clarice Jensen in 2018-19. It was also developed as a virtual reality experience. Featuring minimal interactivity but immersing the user in the environment and soundscape.
